As a result, clinicians are more attuned to the value of keeping patients awake and engaged, which has proven to be critical in preventing the deconditioning and delirium often associated with prolonged sedation. Moreover, the dramatic improvements in patient outcomes are evident in the reduction of complications that frequently arise in the ICU setting. With fewer ventilator days, patients are less susceptible to ventilator-associated pneumonia and other respiratory complications.

Kali Dayton, DNP, AGACNP, is a critical care nurse practitioner, host of the Walking Home From The ICU and Walking You Through The ICU podcasts, and critical care outcomes consultant. She works with ICU teams internationally to transform patient outcomes through early mobility and management of delirium in the ICU.

Dayton ICU Consulting team came to our unit for 4 days, and they did in-person training for over 100 staff members, and spoke with many on our Leadership team. The transformation of the staff after the consulting team was remarkable.

The consulting team pushed us to look outside of our comfort zone in a way that someone from within our team could not achieve. They have firsthand knowledge of what to do, and how to do it and they walked side by side with us while they showing us how to do it. Many of the staff who were very ambivalent prior to the in-person training are now the biggest advocate of implementing the change.
